The weapons don't drop from the boss. The boss drops coins instead. The coins are worthless on their own, but they can be switched to gold and silver coins with a quest (you need 100 monster drops for the gold, and 50 for the silver). Since weapons require 10 gold coins, you need 10 regular coins and 1000 monster drops.

I killed one of those hawks with spears and it only gave me 88k exp.
