Depends.

You have little money?

If yes,then, Mining & blacksmithing.

If no then, Herbalism & Alchemy.

Do you have a boat load of money?

If yes,then,mining & jewel crafting.

If no, see above.

Little money = 10k~10mil.

Boat Load money = 10mil~2.147bil

You can get any of those, they all will benefit you in different ways. Even if you got 1 choice out of those 3 you can get other 2 on your mules.

to me Smith is better because you can create weapons and eqs ...
I rather like JMS's system of maker / profession .
Smith and Jewel supposed to be 1 skill .
= =|||
Now MapleSEA doesnt release it's original content and even deleted monster book

FYI, in MSEA, the prices of the ingredients sold by the NPC is costly.
Most notably the stones are sold for 1 million each (before recent patch is 5 million).
So think about that before you choose your profession.

They changed that to the normal ones in the CTF cum Ice Knight patch.

main char = alchemist
this is to enable using TWO alchemist buff pots at a time + fuse EVENT ITEMS

secondary char for PvP = jewelry or blacksmith. IF u can do pvp, then compare cost of recipes and choose one that will most benefit you

u can always just make a char for either one to make other equips

i usually choose herbalism & alchemy because of the fusing ability

i would suggest ur pvp char(probably mechanic/chief bandit since they are, for some reason, effing easy to get battle points) for smithing/jewelist
from what i see in MSEA, jewelist is easier to earn mesos because for some reason, epic item is easier to get from the item u made from professional skills, and half earring with epic 3 liner junk stat can be sold at 150mil~200mil(cassiopeia price), while 2liner can be sold around 120mil~180mil
u can probably get at least 1 epic earring within a week, and other junks u may use ur alchemist mule to extract them, getting more intermediate item crystal to make more earrings
for me
my mech is smithing, my shadower is jewelist, and my db is alchemist
smithing is merely a mule to pvp and make some equips for the character i train
shadower - my current main, earn mesos for some fund
db - totally mule for pots
